Determination of Water Absorption By Bricks

Referance Standard:

Amercian Standard of Testing Material (ASTM C-67-14)

Significance:

This Test is significant for the porosity of bricks. How much water is absorbed by bricks.

First Class      : less than 15%

Second Class : 15% to 20%

Third Class    : greater than 20%

Porosity : The ability of a material or specific substance to absorb the specific amount of water in it, under ordinary condition.

Factors affecting the efflorescence:

  1. Chemical composition of bricks
  2. Size of pores in brick.
  3. Number of pores in brick.

Testing Apparartus:

  1. Weighing balance with least count of 0.5 g.
  2. Drying oven
  3. Water Container

Test Specimen:

A standard size brick of 9”x4.5”x3”.

Procedure:

  1. Take a brick and remove extra particles with a clean clothe.
  2.  Then put it in a tub of water and place it vertically 1-inch below the water level for 24 hours.
  3. After 24 hours, take it out and clean extra water drops and measure its saturated weight (Ws) in grams.
  4. Then place the sample in an oven at 110-115 degree Celcius temperature for 24-hours.
  5. After that, measure the dried weight (Wd) of sample in grams.
  6. Water Absorbed % = (Ws-Wd)/Wd*100
  7. After this step, you can easily determine water absorbed by brick.

Precautions during performing this test:

  1. Brick should be free from cracks, lines and impurities.
  2. Clean the surface of brick with a brush.
  3. Place brick vertically in water with 1 to 1.5 inch level of water.
  4. Clean the surface of brick with clothe.

As we know:

First Class      : less than 15%

Second Class : 15% to 20%

Third Class    : greater than 20%

So, the lot of brick was of 2nd Class.
